Description

Each 26×30 This Newer pair of American Folk Art portraits are executed in oil on canvas after the original works by Erastus Salisbury Field depicting the subjects Mr. and Mrs. Pearce. The paintings are rendered century American  style, characterized by a formal, somewhat flattened perspective and a meticulous focus on costume and accessories. The female subject, Mrs. Pearce, is depicted wearing an elaborate lace-trimmed cap with floral accents, a large, intricate lace pelerine over a reddish-brown dress, a cross pendant on a long chain, and she holds a small book. The male subject, Mr. Pearce, wears a dark coat over a horizontally-textured vest, a crisp white high-collared shirt with a black cravat and stickpin, and he holds a pair of tan gloves. The brushwork is smooth and descriptive, particularly in the fine detailing of the lace and jewelry, set against mottled, neutral backgrounds. No signatures or dates are apparent on the front of the canvases. Each painting is housed in a contemporary black-finished frame featuring a gilded inner and outer lip.
