Description

This is an antique open-face pocket watch manufactured by the Elgin National Watch Company. The mechanical movement is a G.M. Wheeler grade (Grade 73), serial number 5521844, dating the piece to approximately 1894. The 18 size movement features 15 jewels, a safety pinion, and is decorated with damaskeening. It is a stem-wound and stem-set configuration. The white porcelain enamel dial is marked Elgin in decorative script and features black Roman numeral hour markers and a subsidiary seconds dial at the 6 o’clock position. The movement is housed in a white base metal case, likely nickel-silver or Silverode, manufactured by the Philadelphia Watch Case Company. The inside of the case back bears the company’s star and crescent trademark, a patent date of April 17, 1878, and the case serial number 37181. Case size: 18 size.
