Description
This lot contains a pair of antique railroad lanterns, each representing a historic North American railroad line. The first lantern is a tubular frame oil signal model manufactured by the R. E. Dietz Company, identified as the Vesta model. The galvanized steel frame features a body rim stamped RDG. CO. D, attributing the piece to the Reading Company. The top cap is embossed in an oval with DIETZ VESTA NEW YORK U.S.A. The matching clear glass globe is similarly embossed with the Dietz Vesta logo. This lantern retains its internal fuel fount and burner assembly. The second lantern is a short-globe model produced by The Adams & Westlake Co., known as Adlake. The body rim is stamped G. T. W. for the Grand Trunk Western Railroad and includes the manufacturer name. The clear glass globe is embossed with the ADLAKE mark. This lantern has been modified from its original oil-burning configuration for decorative electrical use. It is fitted with a standard socket and light bulb, with a black power cord extending through the base. The metal frame has been cleaned or replated with a bright silver-toned finish. Dietz Vesta: Approximately 10 inches height excluding handle. Adlake: Approximately 9.5 inches height excluding handle.
