Description
An antique wooden shaving horse, also known as a schnitzelbank, commonly utilized in the late 19th to early 20th century for woodworking or as a harness maker’s bench. The piece is constructed from solid hardwood, likely oak or maple, with a dark reddish-brown stained finish. It features a thick, contoured seat designed with a narrow waist for sitting astride, supported by four splayed, turned legs. At the front is a foot-operated treadle that activates a pivoting wooden clamping head. This mechanism allows the user to push down with their feet to secure a workpiece against the upper surface of the bench for shaping. The construction shows visible mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. No manufacturer’s marks or stamps are visible on the item. Dimensions: 54 x 16 x 36 inches (approximate).
