Description
This folk art painting depicts the three Biblical Magi, also known as the Three Wise Men, in a stylized, naive aesthetic. The work is executed in paint on a support consisting of three vertical, weathered wooden planks. The planks are braced together on the verso with two horizontal cleats and a central vertical strip. Each figure is rendered with bold black outlines and simplified facial features. The palette is composed of olive green, teal, pale pink, and white. The figure on the left is dark-skinned, wearing a green tunic and holding a small rectangular chest. The central figure wears a tall, teal, jeweled crown and a teal cloak, holding a tiered, yellow-accented object. The figure on the right is dressed in a pale pink robe with a diamond-patterned collar and holds a dark ewer or jug. The natural, weathered surface of the wood serves as the background. The work is unsigned and undated. The construction utilizes visible nails throughout the front and reverse. No frame is present.
